Plot: Anand, the title character, is suffering from lymphosarcoma of the intestine. He however appears to be cheerful on the outside and is determined to extract as much pleasure from his remaining lifespan as is possible. Dr. Bhaskar his physician tends to Anand in his last days.
The song "Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli" was originally proposed as background song for the movie. After listening to the song, Rajesh Khanna insisted that a scene should be created to play the song during the movie.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee informed his writer Gulzar to open the film in such a way that the audience knows in the first scene itself that Anand (played by Rajesh Khanna) is dead. He did not want the audience to be in a state of suspense till the end and keep guessing whether Anand will survive or not. By doing that Hrishikesh Mukherjee wanted to concentrate on the essence of the film on how Anand wants to live life fullest and make the best of the time he has.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee wanted to cast Raj Kapoor for the role of Anand. But Raj Kapoor had just recovered from a life threatening illness and Mukherjee couldn't bear to see him die on the screen. He also offered the role to Raj Kapoor's brother Shashi Kapoor who rejected the film.
The term "Babu Moshai" means "great gentleman." Raj Kapoor often affectionately addressed Hrishikesh Mukherjee with this term, just as Anand addresses Banerjee in the film.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee hired Salil Choudhuryas composer and Yogesh as lyricist for this film. Both of them were going through hard times professionally and their careers were revived significantly after the film.
Since Anand was a low budget film, Rajesh Khanna waived off his usual remuneration and accepted only 7 lakhs INR for this film.
Mehmood advised Amitabh Bachchan to grab a secondary role alongside the then superstar Rajesh Khanna in the film, saying, "All you need to do is feed off Khanna, the rest will take care of itself." Amitabh Bachchan would later emerge as a bigger superstar than Rajesh Khanna.
Raju hirani in an interview said that during a conversation with hrishikesh mukherjee he was told by mukherjee that Anand was completed in only 28 days.

Anand was originally supposed to star actors Kishore Kumar and Mehmood in lead roles. Mukherjee was asked to meet Kishore Kumar to discuss the project. However, when he went to Kishore Kumar's residence, he was driven away by the gatekeeper due to a misunderstanding. Kishore Kumar (himself a Bengali) had done a stage show organized by another Bengali man, and was involved in a dispute with this man over financial matters. He had instructed his gatekeeper to drive away this "Bengali", if he ever visited the house. The gatekeeper mistooke Mukherjee to be this "Bengali", and refused him entry. The incident hurt Mukherjee and he decided not to work with Kishore.
Once when asked which song was his favorite, Rajesh Khanna said it was Mukesh's song 'Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaye' from Anand
Gulzar wrote the poem "Maut Tu Ek Kavita Hai" which is narrated by Amitabh Bachchan.
Sanjeev Kumar was the considered for Amitabh Bachchan's role in Anand.
