Director: Anurag Kashyap
Stars: Manoj Bajpayee, Richa Chadha, Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Plot: The movie chronicles three generations of blood feud between the Qureshi's, who were the dominant gang in Wasseypur and the Khans who challenge them. Manipulating the gang war is Ramadhir Singh a political heavyweight who masterminds the murders of Shahid Khan and ignites the feud between the families.
Sardar Khan's son Perpendicular and his friend Tangent are seen watching "Munnabhai MBBS", a popular Bollywood movie released in 2003 starring actor Sanjay Dutt. Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who plays Faizal Khan, Perpendicular's elder brother had a cameo as a pickpocket in the movie.
Some of the scenes were shot in a real slaughter house in Allahabad. Actor Vipin Sharma, who played the role of Ehsan Qureshi was extremely uncomfortable shooting there. He reportedly threw up a few times
The scene featuring a flooded coal mine (just before Sardar Khan is born) is shot in a real coal mine that was actually dry. Using the sound of water dripping and people wading through water, and actors walking as if struggling to cross water, they created the illusion of flooded mine in the darkly lit shot.
The back story of Sultan Qureshi (played by 'Pankaj Tripathi') of a fearsome butcher who at the age of 12 could slaughters and skins 1 buffalo in a single day was based on a real boy the film-makers met at the slaughter house.
Tigmanshu Dhulia (Played as Ramadhir Singh) is the director of famous movies like Paan Singh Tomar, Saheb, biwi aur Gangster, Haasil
Anurag Kashyap has mentioned the French crime drama Mesrine(2008) as an influence on this film.
The movie was to be released in a single part, but no theatre in the county was ready to display a film of over 300 minutes. Hence the idea of two parts came up.
While shooting for the climax, Nawazuddin remembered a childhood incident to bring more reality in his character.Near his Uncle's house,a women was killed brutally by her Husband and was chopped in pieces. Nawaz tried to follow the psychological trauma of the husband.
The writer of this film Zeishan Quadri grew up in Wasseypur and most of the incidents shown in the film are based on Fahim Khan, a local gangster.
The movie is based on gangster Fahim Khan(Faizal Khan in the movie). Similar to the movie, Fahim Khan's father Shafi Khan(Sardar Khan in the movie) was also a gangster who had two wives. His second wife was from Bengal and was not on friendly terms with Shafi Khan's family. He was killed in a shootout in a gas station as depicted in the movie. The character of Ramadhir Singh is inspired by Surajdeo Singh who was a political heavyweight in the city. He was known to have a rivalry with Fahim Khan but is not known to have taken part in the gang war directly. Ramadhir Singh died in 1991, several years before Shafi Khan's death. Also Fahim Khan's grandfather never engaged in a criminal activity. He was a coal worker as depicted in the movie and lived a normal life.
Aditya Kumar (Perpendicular) begged Anurag Kashyap for a role in the movie. Anurag told him to learn to play with a blade in his mouth. He spent a year practicing and the blade scenes shown in the movie were shot with a real blade.
The 'Katta' making scene is based on a real conversation the director Anurag Kashyap had with a local blacksmith who was known to illegally manufacture it for the mafia.
In some scenes with young Ramadhir, a bridge can be seen in the background under construction. But later on as movie progressed, the bridge got completed. This was done by CGI.
The permission-scene between Faizal Khan (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and Mohsina (Huma Qureshi) where Mohsina gets mad when Faizal touches her hand without her permission, is in fact very similar to a true story that happened with Nawazuddin. Similarly when Nawaz asks to have sex with Mohsina and she gets offended is based on a true story that happened to Nawaz during his days as a struggling actor.
Unlike the movie the real Fahim Khan(Faizal) is still alive and is currently serving a life sentence for murder.
The real Fahim Khan was also a pothead as depicted in the movie.
The shootout scene in the beginning of the movie is based on a real incident. In 2004, more than a dozen gangsters attacked Fahim Khan with AK47 rifles at his residence. Two people were killed and three were injured including two policemen. Fahim Khan managed to escaped by fleeing to his terrace and jumping to his neighbors house. The gangsters reportedly fired more than 600 bullets.
As depicted in the movie the real Fahim Khan's family was also watching the famous Hindi soap 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' when the shootout occurred.
Fahim Khan's older brother was indeed killed while leaving a courthouse as depicted in the movie. Similarly his younger brother was murdered and his body was dumped in the railway tracks as seen in the movie. Both the murders remain unsolved.
Anurag Kashyap initially declined the movie because he felt it was too similar to Brazilian crime film - City Of God(2002)
