Plot: Bhavani Shankar a rich businessman believes that a man without a mustache is a man without a character. He is also against any of his employees indulging in recreation of any kind. When his employee Ram Prasad is caught at a soccer match, Ram pretends that he has a twin brother. What follows is a hilarious comedy where in order to save his job he has to pretend to be two different people with the help of his actor friend Deven Varma.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee had first selected Rekha to enact the heroine's part but felt that he would be wasting a talented actress in film where the hero was the mainstay. He replaced her with Bindya Goswami. The very next year he made Khubsoorat, with Rekha in a pivotal role.
This movie inspired Rohit Shetty's movie Bol Bachchan, released in 2012.
Amitabh Bachchan has a Cameo in one scene where Amol Parekar goes with Devan Verma to try Dhotis.
The movie was remade in Tamil as Thillu Mullu starring Tamil superstar Rajinikanth. It was the first film that featured him without his moustache.
